South African police to face charges over horrific death 02
ELIZABETH JACKSON: Eight South African police officers are facing murder charges after the death of a Mozambican man who was dragged behind a police van.
An investigation was launched soon after footage emerged displaying the man getting hauled by way of the streets with his hands cuffed to the car.
Police mentioned that they pulled more than an individual that they had a problem with this taxi driver about where he had parked and how he had parked, and within moments it appears an altercation started.
They attempted to arrest him; they beat him; they threw him to the ground.
As outlined by the mobile phone footage that was seen, he was then tied towards the back of a paddy wagon and dragged by means of the streets. It was at the very least 500 metres that he was dragged.
Now that's where the mobile phone video ended,Ray Ban Sale, then two hours later, in police custody, we got the news that he was dead.
So he was bashed there around the scene, he was dragged - we never know what took location in the cells, but we do know that eight police officers happen to be charged with murder now.
ELIZABETH JACKSON: What else do we know about this victim, Ginny?
As you say, he was 27 years old; he was from Mozambique, wasn't he?
GINNY STEIN: Yes. He came with his loved ones when he was 10 years old. South Africa has extended been a drawcard for workers to come,Ray Ban Wayfarer, and his father was a miner who worked inside the mines in South Africa.
South Africa is often a land of migrant labour, and so that is how he ended up in South Africa, and he'd been here for 17 years.
So his story, functioning as a taxi driver,Cheap Ray Ban Sunglasses, is just not uncommon for consumers who come to operate in South Africa.
ELIZABETH JACKSON: Is it the case that workers like this are many times treated in a shoddy manner by police?
GINNY STEIN: Appear, there is great xenophobia right here in South Africa.
If you are from elsewhere,Ray Ban UK Sale, you could get worse therapy in the police - it's extended been seen.
Zimbabweans and Mozambique regularly place in complaints in regards to the way that they are treated, and they are consumers who are not officially right here or perhaps he was, but they are typically victims of police brutality in just about every which way.
They're picked on inside the workplace, singled out for undue attention in the street. Just not being in the same place, similar accents, same what ever, may cause you to be singled out.
ELIZABETH JACKSON: So what takes place now,Cheap Ray Bans, Ginny? Police,Ray Ban Wayfarer Sale, as you say, have been arrested. Presumably, they've been charged and will seem in court sometime next week?
GINNY STEIN: Properly, it is exciting - the head in the national police commissioner came out and stated initially that the eight officers had been suspended.
There was an outcry right here about this, saying, "What?! Only suspended? Why aren't they arrested?", and within a matter of hours, that position had gone from becoming suspended to being charged with murder.
The internal division - the watchdog with the police, as such - taking that action. Now, South African police, they're highly substantially within the spotlight here at the moment.
The Marikana mine massacre final year, in which 34 miners had been shot down by police - there's been a commission of inquiry underway right here for the previous handful of weeks overshadowed, obviously, by the trial of Oscar Pistorius.
